In the Name of Jesus
Text: Philippians 2:8–11
“And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Introduction
Names carry power and authority. But among all names in heaven, on earth, and under the earth, there is one name that stands supreme—the name of Jesus. This name is not just a title, but a divine authority given by God because of Christ’s humility, obedience, and sacrifice.
1. The Path to Exaltation (v.8–9)
Jesus humbled Himself to the lowest point—death on the cross. Because of His obedience, God exalted Him and gave Him a name above every name. This teaches us that the power of the name of Jesus is rooted in His sacrifice and obedience. Humility precedes exaltation.
2. The Power of the Name (v.10)
“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow.”
The name of Jesus carries authority in three realms:
- Heaven – angels and all heavenly beings bow.
- Earth – kings, rulers, and every person must submit.
- Under the earth – demons and powers of darkness cannot resist the name.
This shows that there is no situation or power beyond the reach of His name.
3. The Confession of the Name (v.11)
Every tongue must confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. To confess His name is to declare His lordship. Whether willingly in salvation or unwillingly in judgment, all humanity will one day acknowledge His authority.
Application
- When you pray in the name of Jesus, you are invoking heaven’s authority.
- When you face trials, call on His name—it carries victory and deliverance.
- Live your life in a way that honors His name, for it is not just to be spoken but lived out.
Conclusion
The name of Jesus is not an ordinary name. It is a name above every name, given by God, carrying authority in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. When you use this name in faith, chains break, demons flee, sickness bows, and victory is assured.
So today, whatever you are facing—declare it in the name of Jesus, and it must bow.
